How the List Came to Be:
Last year, I studied two doctrines for months: The Sovereignty of God and Human Responsibility. God’s “sovereignty” means that He is absolute in authority and unrestricted in His supremacy. Everything that happens is the result of His will. Job said, “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.”
At the same time, the Bible teaches us that we, who are made in His image, have a responsibility to be involved in His sovereign will. We are not robots and we will be held accountable for the choices we make. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Thessalonians, “He (Jesus) will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.”
These are twin truths and hard to reconcile. They are even harder to teach in a way that people can understand. One night, late last summer, I was lying in bed and it was 2am and I was wide awake. Whenever that happens, I start to pray. I was really burdened and asked the Lord to give me something that I could use to help people understand these seemingly irreconcilable truths.
The Holy Spirit began to form thoughts in my head to illustrate how God has chosen His own and how the ones He has chosen respond to Him. It came to me in the form of a parable. A parable is a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson. Even the name of the parable, “The List,” came to me – the whole thing, all within twenty minutes.
There are many verses that I could share but one stands out that corresponds so clearly to “The List.” It is Acts 13:48:
“And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.”
I hope this parable is a blessing to you!
