About This Study:

We have been warned! Job’s friend told him:
“…but people are born to trouble,
as surely as the sparks fly upward.” Job 5:7
Jesus also:
“I have told you all this so you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows.” John 16:33
We all know this, but we don’t expect it to strike so deep. The deepest sorrow is the loss of a loved one, and the deepest of the deep is the loss of a child. Really good friends come alongside and say, “I have no words.”
But there are words. God’s words tell us that we can find comfort and peace in the midst of sorrow. Pastor John Bell had to dig deep to find those words after the loss of his daughter, and his goal is to share them with us so that when sorrow tries to overwhelm us, we can find the answers to “Why is this happening?”

Oikos

“Oikos” is a word infused with a great deal of meaning, hope, and promise. In the Bible, it can mean “a house”(an inhabited house, home, any building whatever, any dwelling place), or “descendants.” Still, here at WoW Church, we are using it in the sense of “all the persons forming one family, a household.”

In English, “household” refers to the nuclear family.

In Greek, the usage is broader and encompasses family, neighbors, coworkers, friends, and those we regularly come in contact with.

These 8-15 people may be your neighbors, coworkers, local barista, grocery store clerk, parents on your kid’s sports team, your hairdresser, professor, physical therapist, roommate, business associate, mechanic, a waiter at your favorite restaurant, dog groomer, gardener, carpool buddies, dentist, etc.

Oikos offers a fresh way of doing things as the church. God has placed 8-15 people in your sphere of influence who don’t have a community to belong to and need to hear the Good News from God. During this season of Oikos, I want to equip you better (the church universal) to reach your 8-15 people.

John Bell will provide the teaching; you provide the Oikos.

Our plan is to form a new group of shepherds to care for the flock.

Be the shepherd that God called you to be!
